CTE Contractors were appointed by Perrys Vauxhall Barnsley to deliver a complete electrical energy efficiency upgrade across their dealership. The site consisted of workshops, offices, corridors, staff areas, and external lighting, all of which relied on conventional systems that consumed unnecessary energy during low occupancy or out-of-hours periods.

The project objective was clear: reduce energy waste, modernise controls, and create an intelligent, automated system that would operate efficiently without requiring constant manual input from staff.

The Challenge

The dealership’s previous setup lacked automated control, meaning equipment, lighting, and heating often remained on for long hours even when areas were unoccupied. 

Key issues identified during the initial site survey included:

  • Lighting was left running continuously in low-traffic areas such as corridors, WCs, and store rooms.
  • Panel heaters operate throughout the day, regardless of occupancy.
  • Water heaters are powered 24/7, leading to unnecessary electricity use overnight and at weekends.
  • External lighting running on basic timers without sensitivity to daylight hours or actual usage.
  • Office lights are manually controlled, frequently left on after working hours.

These inefficiencies resulted in high energy bills and avoidable carbon emissions. Perrys wanted a modern, sustainable, and low-maintenance solution that would integrate seamlessly with daily operations.

The Solution

Following a detailed energy assessment, CTE Contractors designed and installed a site-wide intelligent control system that combined automation, LED lighting, and smart connectivity.

Lighting Controls

  • PIR (Passive Infrared) Sensors were installed in corridors, WCs, and storerooms to automatically switch lights on when movement was detected and off after a set period of inactivity.
  • Occupancy Sensors were fitted in office areas to ensure lights were only active when spaces were in use, eliminating energy waste during meetings, breaks, or after hours.
  • All existing fluorescent and halogen fittings were upgraded to high-efficiency LED luminaires, improving light quality and reducing power consumption by over 60%.
  • External Lighting was reconfigured with energy-efficient controls to respond to ambient light levels, ensuring illumination only during low-light periods.

Heating & Power Management

  • Countdown Timers were fitted to panel heaters, ensuring they could not be left on all day. Staff can activate heat when required, with automatic shutdown after a set duration.
  • Wi-Fi-controlled sockets were installed for plug-in equipment such as display units, computers, and chargers. These can now be switched off remotely or scheduled to power down outside working hours.
  • Wi-Fi-controlled water heater systems were introduced, allowing the dealership to schedule operation only during business hours. This prevented constant standby heating and further reduced daily electricity use.
  • Heating Controls were programmed to maintain comfort levels during opening hours while optimising performance based on occupancy and temperature conditions.

All systems were networked through a user-friendly control interface, enabling Perry's management to monitor and adjust settings from any connected device.
